The obvious thing I am thankful for is my family. Of course without them my life would be meaningless. But in reality, I am really thankful for my job. I remember many years ago on a flight to Hawaii a priest sitting besides me asked,
What is the one most important thing in your life?
Since he was/is a man of the cloth my obvious answer was my family and love. But he said no, it’s not. Because without a job I could not provide for my family. I can not put a roof over their heads and clothes on their backs. Coming from a priest, this to me, was profound. I never forgotten his wisdome to this day. I keep challenging his statement, but he continues to be right.
There are some days when it is hard to put food on the table, but somehow we have gotten by. As they say, where this is a will, there is a way. For many years now we have been living beyond our means and it has finally caught up to us. We have had to scale back many of the luxuries that we never gave a second thought to. It’s one of my biggest regrets. Considering the current state of our economy I am very thankful for my job.
As much as I bitch and complain about our current situation, I know it could be worse without my job (knock on wood). Sure I wish we could make enough money so Ebru wouldn’t have to work. I could wish for a bigger home so our kids could play freely in their own play room. But for now our office would have to suffice.
There are other drawbacks of having a bigger house such as the higher costs of maintaining it. As it is, I hardly have enough time to mow the lawn and keep our existing square footage clean. I can’t image how it would be to maintain a bigger house. In this case, I am thankful that we don’t have a bigger house.
Another thing I thankful for is my health. Being in the 40+ club is not easy. Well not easy if you are not LeRoy Bell. At 59 years old, he is doing something right! I am sure he is thankful for that. I could only be so lucky. For now my health is right up there with my job. Without good health I can not make it to work or care for my family. So I definitely thankful for my current status of my physical health. What’s so scary about my health is that it can go bad at anytime. If I shake the wrong person’s hand, drive carelessly, or do anything to jeopardize my health, my whole family could be effected.
So as you can see, I have a lot to be thankful for. How about you?
