What Defines You? (Restore)

For the last 45 years I have been trying to answer this question.  So far I haven’t been that successful.  I do, however, know what does not define me.  This is probably an easier way to answer this question.  I know that I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I know enough about myself to make more right decisions than wrong ones. I can live with that.  I know who and what I am.

To Justice and Jasmine – understanding what defines you is not taught in schools.  You could probably read about it somewhere or maybe watch a movie, but it is not going to be the same until you experience life.  Like everyone else, you will go through highs and lows.  You will experience pain and pleasure, happiness and sadness, joy and grief and through all this you will come to know yourself.  You will set standards and survival tactics to keep you at a happy medium.  That’s all good.  But will this happy medium define you?

It’s understandable to be safe.  As your father, I only want you to be happy, healthy, and successful.  I also want you to be emotionally and mentally stable and confident in knowing who you are.  You will go through changes in your lives and the definition of ‘you’ will change.  I am hoping and praying that this development will be positive because I want to see both of you happy.  I don’t mean content, I mean be really happy.  Know yourself before getting lost in or with someone else.

Be sure that you like eggs over easy because you like it not because someone else does.  Be sure you like blue jean because you look great in them not because it is the style or someone else is wearing them.  Know yourself.  Know what you like and do not like.  I know it’s easier than it sounds and your answer will probably change.  That’s ok.  It means you’re growing and experiencing life!  It’s exactly what I want you to do.

My loving son and precious daughter – know what you want out of life.  We want you to have passion not just contentment.  Your mom and I are here to guide and support you the best we can.
